Latin name: Cirsium heterophyllum

Description: A very hardy plant, melancholy thistle is a tall, clump-forming plant found in upland meadows, grasslands, roadsides and open woodlands. In the UK it is more commonly found in northern England and Scotland, with a scattered distribution elsewhere in England, Wales and Ireland.

Flowering time: July-August

Colour: Red-purple

Management: A hardy species, melancholy thistle can cope with moist soils in both shade and direct sunlight.
