Common Name: Viper's-Bugloss Latin Name: Echium vulgare Description: The Viper's Bugloss plant is a biennial herb dotted with red based bristles and carrying blue-purple flowers. It is widespread in much of the UK and Ireland, absent from the north of Scotland and north-western Ireland. It inhabits dry grasslands, sandy and chalky soils, dunes and cliffs. Height: 80cm Flowering time: June to September Colour: Blue through purple. Management: Viper's Bugloss grows best in full sunlight on well drained chalky or sandy soils, although it can tolerate a range of soil types including nutritionally poor soils. It is also tolerant of maritime exposure.
